As Part of WaterAid Ghana’s Endogenouse Development Program for some Communities in Ghana, they organized a 2week Video and Photography Documentation workshop as a pilot program for the people of Bongo and Kessena Nanka West Districts in the Upper East Region. Lifenote pictures was tasked to develop a curriculum to enable these community members who some had not attained any formal education, understand the basics of storytelling.
We realized from the onset that the biggest challenge was the educational level of these folks. So we came up with a participatory approach; a hands-on technique that allowed the participants themselves to teach each other how to operate a camera and to shoot. How this works is that the facilitators (videographer/photographer) will teach one participant the operations of the camera and how to shoot. That participant in turn will teach what he was taught to the next person sitting by him/her and that person will do same till the last person. After a period of time they became conversant with the camera and some basic techniques of storytelling. We did this in two sessions; theory and practical.
All participants of training attended the training course with curiosity and actively participated in the group work. Overall, the response from participants were positive but in the case of Bongo District the women were more enthusiastic and active than the men. The women in Kassena Nanka West on the other hand, were less enthused to the learning process. After each completion of modules /workshops the participants were asked to shoot any idea they wanted. This was used to assess the overall performance, the extent to which the training objectives were met, the relevance and usefulness of the training's content, performance of trainers, the appropriateness of the training methodologies used, usefulness of the materials used and logistics of the trainings.
Overall, as a pilot Program in the Endogenous Development framework, this workshop proved very useful in empowering these community members to tell their own story in the field of Video and Photo Documentation. It is also very vital to note that the methodology employed in this Workshop also proved very effective in impacting the basic Video and Photography skills to the Participants.
Below are some videos photographed by some of the participants of the workshops.
